A week with my Finnish friends / Viikko suomalaisten kavereideni kanssa

Hi everyone! Moi kaikki!

Last week two Finnish friends of mine, Ebba and Satu, came to Seoul on holiday for 10 days. It was a complete coincidence that we would be here at the same time! We tried to plan a bit what we want to do together. Some plans worked out and some didn't, it was definitely a somewhat disorganised week, but we had fun :) Here's our week day by day:

Viime viikolla kaksi suomalaista kaveriani, Ebba ja Satu, tulivat Seouliin 10 päivän lomalle. Oli silkkaa sattumaa, että satuimme olemaan täällä samaan aikaan! Yritimme vähän suunnitella, mitä halusimme tehdä yhdessä. Jotkut suunnitelmat onnisuivat ja toiset eivät. Tämä viikko oli hyvin sekava, mutta hauska :) Tässä on viikon tapahtumat päivä päivältä:

Saturday / lauantai

My friends arrived on Saturday. I showed them around Hongdae and took them to the playground, where we had the pleasure of watching a rap performance by a group called Black Bean. They were funny and tried to accomodate us foreigners "who can't understand Korean at all". It was nice that they had someone translating some parts of what they were saying into English, but it was a bit irritating when they kept mentioning the word 외국인, meaning foreigner, and they thought we didn't know that they were talking about us. They rapped well though and had the audience clapping, moving our hands in the air "hiphop style"(I'm sorry, I don't know what it's called ^^') and told us how to sing and dance along with them. Sometimes they would say the phrase very slowly so that us foreigners could repeat what they said. They probably thought we were thick as two short planks -.-

Kaverini saapuivat lauantaina. Vein heidät ympäri Hongdaeta ja leikkipuistolle, jossa saimme nauttia Black Bean-nimisen ryhmän räppäämisestä. He olivat hauskoja ja yrittivät olla avuliaita meitä ulkomaalaisia kohtaan "jotka eivät ymmärrä koreaa ollenkaan". Oli kivaa, että joku käänsi meille osan räppärien puheista, mutta oli ärsyttävää että he käyttivät koko aja sanaa 외국인, eli ulkomaalainen, ja luulivat ettemme tienneet heidän puhuvan meistä. He räppäsivät hyvin ja saivat yleisön mukaan taputtamaan, heiluttamaan käsiämme ilmassa "hiphop-tyylisesti" (sori, en tiedä miksi sitä kutsutaan ^^') ja laulamaan sekä tanssimaan heidän kanssaan. Joskus he toistivat jonkin lauseen tosi hitaasti, jotta me ulkomaalaiset pystyimme toistamaan, mitä he sanoivat. He varmaan pitivät meitä hyvin tyhminä -.-

Sunday / sunnuntai

On Sunday we visited You Are Here Cafe, a cafe owned by one of our favourite Youtubers, Simon and Martina from Eatyourkimchi (EYK). It was a nice cafe and the banana milkshake was delicious, but pricey. They have a Speaker's Corner, where people visiting the cafe can answer the question of the week, be filmed while doing so and the video will go on Youtube. We answered a question that went something like this: "What food from your country is not liked or misunderstood  internationally?". We talked about salmiakki and mämmi, because Ebba and I (and most Finnish people) like salmiakki while Satu doesn't and foreigners usually don't, and Satu likes mämmi while Ebba and I (and some/many? Finnish people) don't. Both happen to be food/sweets that are black in colour and have a unique flavour that you either hate or love. I checked Youtube and the video isn't there yet. I'll add the link to it if they publish the video.

Sunnuntaina kävimme You Are Here Cafessa, yksien lempi-Youtubaajiemme (kuulostaapa oudolta :D) kahvilassa. He ovat Simon ja Martina Eatyourkimchistä (EYK:sta). Kahvila oli hieno ja banaanipirtelö herkullinen, mutta hintava. Siellä on alue nimeltä Speaker's Corner (puhujan kulma), jossa kahvilan kävijät voivat vastata viikon kysymykseen. Vastaus kuvataan ja julkaistaan Youtubessa. Vastasimme kysymykseen, joka meni jotenkin näin: "Onko jokin ruoka maassanne, josta ei pidetä tai jota ei ymmärretä kansainvälisesti?". Puhuimme salmiakista ja mämmistä, koska minä ja Ebba (ja melkein kaikki suomalaiset) pitävät salmiakista, mutta Satu ei ja yleensä ulkomaalaiset eivät pidä siitä. Satu taas tykkää mämmistä, mutta me Ebban kanssa emme (ja jotkut/monet? suomalaiset eivät). Videota ei ole vielä julkaistu Youtubessa, mutta lisään linkin siihen jos se julkaistaan.

Afterwards we visited the YG Building. YG Entertainment is the music company that my favourite Kpop group, BigBang, belong to. We sat outside across the street from it while eating triangle kimbap and icecream and suddenly a large car drove to the entrance with Bobby from iKON, YG's new boy group, in it. The window was open, so my friends saw him and waved at him! We saw him enter the building, he bowed to the security guard before entering and looked our way. We also saw the rest of iKON entering in another car, they took their time before entering the building. It was awkward sitting there watching them and having them see us just sitting there watching them xD

Sen jälkeen kävimme YG-rakennuksella. YG Entertainment on musiikkiyhtiö jolle lempi Kpop-bändini, BigBang, kuuluu. Istuimme tien toisella puolella sitä vastapäätä samalla kun söimme kolmio kimbappia ja jäätelöä. Yhtäkkiä suuri auto ajoi sisäänkäynnille ja sen sisällä oli Bobby iKONista, YG:n uudesta poikabändistä. Auton ikkuna oli auki, joten kaverini näkivät hänet ja vilkuttivat hänelle! Näimme, kun hän meni rakennuksen sisälle. Hän kumartui vartijalle ennen kuin meni sisälle ja katsoi meidän suuntaan. Näimme myös loput iKONista saapuvan toisessa autossa, he menivät rakennukseen hyvin rauhallisesti. Oli noloa istua siinä ja katsoa heitä samalla kun he katsoivat meitä kun istuimme siinä katsellessa heitä xD

Monday / maanantai

We went to Seoul Fashion Week with Ten, Melina, Aleena, Jana and Elli at Dongdaemun Design Plaza. It was a cool place with loads of people ready to pose for the photographers. We also got photographed by a professional photographer! The others really enjoyed the event, but it wasn't really my thing, Elli didn't really enjoy it either. I didn't like the fact that some parents had dressed up their children and tried to get them photographed, especially when the children didn't even want to be photographed.

Kävimme katsomassa Tenin, Melinan, Aleenan, Janan ja Ellin kanssa Seoulin muotiviikkoa Dongdaemun Design Plazassa. Se oli hieno alue, jossa monet ihmiset seisoivat valmiina valokuvattavaksi. Joku ammattikuvaaja otti meistäkin kuvia! Muut pitivät tapahtumasta hyvin paljon, mutta se ei ollut ihan minun ja Ellin juttu. En pitänyt siitä, miten jotkut vanhemmat olivat pukeneet lapsensa hienosti ja yrittivät saada heitä kuvattavaksi, vaikka lapset eivät halunneet poseerata kuvia varten.

Afterwards Ebba, Satu and I visited Gyeongbokgung Palace (which was closed), Bukchon village and Insadong. We encountered some eager school boys who were happy to take a few pictures of us for us at the palace entrance xD In Bukchon we visited a small art exhibition and in Insadong we visited the Jogyesa Buddhist Temple. There was a service going on in the temple, so we couldn't go in. There was a very devout atmosphere, as it was dark outside, we could smell the burning of incense from the candles and we could hear the monks and people praying. I'd never experienced a Buddhist service before, so it was a very interesting experience, although we were just looking in from the open doors. After visiting the temple we walked around Insadong and had a delicious dinner.

Sen jälkeen Ebba, Satu ja minä kävimme Gyeongbokgung palatsissa (joka oli suljettu), Bukchonin kylässä ja Insadongissa. Tapasimme innokkaan koulupoika ryhmän, jotka mielellään ottivat meistä kuvia meitä varten palatsin edessä xD Bukchonissa kävimme pienessä taidenäyttelyssä ja Insadongissa kävimme Jogyesa buddhisti temppelissä. Siellä oli jumalanpalvelus meneillään, joten emme voineet mennä sisälle. Siellä oli hyvin harras tunnelma, sillä ulkona oli pimeää, pystyimme haistamaan suitsukkeita ja kuulemaan munkkien sekä ihmisten rukoilua. En ollut koskaan kokenut buddhisti jumalanpalvelusta, joten se oli hyvin kiinnostava kokemus, vaikka vain katsoimme sisään avoimista ovista. Sen jälkeen kävelimme Insadongissa ja söimme herkullisen illallisen.

Tuesday / tiistai

On Tuesday Ebba and Satu went to Seoul Fashion Week again. I stayed at the guesthouse and showed them around Ewha in the evening before they went out for Korean BBQ with the people from their guesthouse.

Tiistaina Ebba ja Satu menivät jälleen Seoul muotiviikkoa katsomaan. Minä jäin majatalolle ja illalla näytin heille Ewhan aluetta ennen kuin he menivät syömään korealaista grilliruokaa heidän majatalon väen kanssa.

Wednesday / keskiviikko

We went to Lotte World Adventure amusement park! It took ages to get there, probably around 40 minutes. We had a fun day on the rides :)
Menimme Lotte World Adventure-huvipuistoon! Kesti ikuisuuden päästä sinne, varmaan noin 40 minuuttia. Vietimme hauskan päivän laitteissa pyörien :)

We went on: / Kävimme näissä laitteissa:
- Giant Loop, which was uncomfortable as we mainly hung upside down. / Se oli suuri rinki, jossa oli epämukavaa olla, koska olimme suurimman osan ajasta väärinpäin.
- The Conquistador, which was basically a giant viking ship. It was funny to watch some of the Korean boys lean their heads against their backpacks that were in front of them. They were so scared, poor things! / Se oli jättimäinen viikinkilaiva. Oli hassua katsoa, kuinka jotkut pelokkaat korealaiset pojat nojasivat edessä oleviin reppuihinsa.
- Drunken Basket, which was a much crazier version of the teacup ride at Linnanmäki. / Tämä oli paljon hullumpi laite kuin Linnanmäen teekupit!
- Gyro Drop, which was a 100km/hr drop from a 70 m tall tower. It was really scary, but I think Satu was more traumatised after it than I was xD The view from the top was nice, before we got dropped. / Se oli 70 metrin pudotus 100 km tuntinopeudessa. Se oli tosi pelottavaa, mutta luulen että Satu sai pahemmat traumat kuin minä xD Tornin huipulta oli hienot näkymät, ennen kuin meidät pudotettiin.
- Gyro Spin, which was a fun, spinning wave ride /Tämä oli hauska, pyörivä aalto-laite. Samanlainen löytyy Tykkimäeltä Kouvolasta.
- The Haunted House, which was a boring, supposedly scary, 3D animated film. /Tämä oli tylsä, mukamas pelottava, 3D animaatio elokuva.
-  Jungle Adventure, which was like Hurjakuru in Linnanmäki, so a water ride in a huge round boat. / Tämä oli kuin Linnanmäen Hurjakuru, mutta siellä oli hienommat puitteet kuin Lintsillä.
-  French Revolution, a massive indoor rollercoaster. We queued for an hour to get on the ride and it wasn't even worth it! The rollercoaster went upside down in all directions and my head kept banging against the safety bars on my seat. It wasn't fun... / Tämä oli tosi pitkä sisällä oleva vuoristorata. Jonotimme tunnin päästääksemme kyytiin, eikä se ollut edes odotuksen arvoinen! Laite kiemurteli väärinpäin joka suunnassa ja pääni osui koko ajan istuimeni suojakaaria vasten. Ei ollut hauskaa...
- Aeronauts Ballon Ride, which were hot air balloons that took us around the whole indoor amusement park. / Kuumailmapalloja, jotka ajoivat ympäri koko sisä-huvipuiston.
- Pharaoh's Fury, which was a jeep ride surrounded by Egyptian artefacts / Jeeppi ajelu, jonka varrella oli egyptiläisiä tavaroita.
- Flume Ride, which was a water ride surrounded by dinosaurs. It had a few steep downhills. / Vesilaite, jota ympäröi dinosaurukset, siinä oli pari jyrkkää alamäkeä.
- Atlantis, a really good rollercoaster. It was the best ride there! We went on it last and had to wait about 35 minutes to go on it. It was definitely worth the wait and the ride lasted longer than the French Revolution. / Tämä oli paras laite koko huvipuistossa, tosi hyvä vuoristorata! Se oli viimeinen laitteemme ja odotimme 35 minuuttia päästääksemme kyytiin. Se oli todellakin odotuksen arvoinen ja kyyti kesti pidempään kuin French Revolutionissa.

There was more focus on the theme of the ride than on the ride itself, i.e. there were more things around the ride than excitement while riding the ride. There were loads of couples there too. While queueing for French Revolution, we were stuck between two couples. The one in front of us took selfies during the whole hour we were waiting to go on the ride and the couple behind us kept kissing and hugging. Korea never seizes to remind us that we are single xD

Huvipuiston laitteet eivät olleet kovin jännittäviä, laitteiden teemoihin oli panostettu enemmän. Tarkoitan siis, että laitteiden ympärillä oli enemmän härveleitä kuin että laitteet itse olisivat olleet jännittäviä. Huvipuistossa oli myös paljon pariskuntia. Olimme kahden pariskunnan välissä, kun jonotimme French Revolutionia varten. Edessä oleva pariskunta otti selfieitä koko tunnin ajan ja takana oleva pariskunta joko suuteli tai halaili koko ajan. Korea aina jaksaa muistuttaa meitä, että olemme sinkkuja xD

Thursday / torstai


We were hoping to be able to attend some Kpop event in Digital Media City, but when we got there we found out that we should've bought tickets for it a month ago. We were a bit annoyed, because we were given information that it was a free event. Instead, we visited the N Seoul Tower, aka Namsan Tower. It took ages to get there, but it was worth it to see the view. We saw the city in all its night time glory. It was nice that the windows also showed where and how far away the world's capital cities are. We found Helsinki ^^

Toivoimme, että pääsisimme osallistumaan yhteen Kpop-tapahtumaan Digital Media Cityssä, mutta kun saavuimme sinne, meille kerrottiin, että meidän olisi pitänyt ostaa liput jo kuukausi sitten. Meitä hieman ärsytti, sillä olimme lukeneet jostain, että tapahtuma oli ilmainen. Menimme N Seoul Tower-torniin sen sijaan. Sinne kesti ikuisuus matkustaa, mutta näköala oli sen arvoinen. Näimme kaupungin yön komeudessaan. Oli kivaa, että ikkunat myös näyttivät missä ja kuinka kaukana maapallon pääkaungit ovat. Löysimme Helsingin ^^

Friday / perjantai

On Friday Ebba and Satu visited Gangnam while I was working at the guesthouse. We met up with Ebba's Korean friend, Duhwan, in the late afternoon and we spent the evening with him. He took us to Myeongdong, where we tried street food, ate bibimbap for dinner and injeolmi bingsu for dessert. Injeolmi bingsu is a Korean dessert made of shaved ice, some sort of ground rice cake powder and gooey rice cakes. We ate it with some sort of thin milk custard and red bean paste. It was quite nice, but I couldn't get used to the dry texture of the powder.

Perjantaina Ebba ja Satu menivät Gangnamiin kun olin töissä majatalossa. Iltapäivällä tapasimme Ebban korealaisen kaverin, Duhwanin, joka vei meidät Myeongdongiin. Kokeilimme katuruokaa, söimme bibimbappia illalliseksi ja injeolmi bingsua jälkiruoaksi. Injeolmi bingsu on korealainen jälkiruoka, joka koostuu jäähileistä, jauhetuista riisikakuista ja pehmeistä riisikakuista. Söimme sitä maitomaisen ohuen kastikkeen ja punapaputahnan kera. Se oli ihan hyvää, en vain pystynyt tottumaan jauheen kuivaan koostumukseen.

Afterwards we visited the Han River. It was nice to see the river and just chill there while drinking banana milk and listening to some street performer sing. / Sen jälkeen kävimme Han-joella. Oli kivaa nähdä joki ja istua rauhassa juoden banaanimaitoa ja kuunnellen jonkun katusoittajan laulamista.

Saturday / lauantai


Ebba and Satu had gone out clubbing the night before and met two Korean men there. They'd made dinner plans with the men and invited me to go with them, so we spent the evening together with Chun and Bo. We met them in Jonggak and after searching for a while, we found the restaurant Chun wanted to take us to. We had a very fancy version of Korean BBQ. There were loads of different salad leaves to wrap the grilled meat in and we had cheese and different types of mushrooms to grill as well. We also had kimchi tofu stew and some seafood stew with it. It was a very delicious meal.

Ebba ja Satu olivat menneet yökerhoon edellisenä iltana ja he tapasivat siellä kaksi korealaista miestä. He sopivat illallisesta miesten kanssa ja he kutsuivat minut mukaan, joten vietimme lauantai-illan yhdessä Chunin ja Bon kanssa. Tapasimme heidät Jonggakissa ja hieman etsimisen jälkeen löysimme ravintolan, jonne Chun halusi viedä meidät. Söimme hienompaa versiota korealaisesta grilliruoasta. Siinä oli paljon erilaisia salaatinlehtiä, johon grillattu liha paketoitiin, ja grillasimme myös juustoa ja erilaisia sieniä. Söimme myös kimchi tofu pataa ja jotain merenelävä-pataa. Ateria oli tosi herkullinen.

After dinner we walked around the area nearby. We visited the Cheonggyecheon Stream and saw Gyeongbokgung Palace at night. Then we went back to Hongdae, where we waited with Bo for his bus to go home, because he lived far away and had to work the next morning. Then we had icecream and went to a noraebang to sing. We'd payed for only an hour, but we kept getting extra time for "singing very well", so we ended up being there for around two hours xD We had a fun, long last night together. Ebba and Satu didn't want to leave Korea, but I'm sure they will be able to come back some day :)

Illallisen jälkeen kävelimme lähialueella. Kävimme Cheonggyecheon-purolla ja näimme Gyeongbokgung palatsin yöllä. Sitten menimme takaisin Hongdaeseen, jossa odotimme Bon kanssa bussia kotimatkaa varten, sillä hän asui kaukana ja hänellä oli töitä seuraavana aamuna. Sen jälkeen söimme jäätelöä ja menimme noraebangiin laulamaan. Maksoimme vain tunnista, mutta "lauloimme niin hyvin", että saimme koko ajan lisäaikaa ja olimme siellä n. kaksi tuntia xD Meillä oli hauska, pitkä viimeinen ilta yhdessä. Ebba ja Satu eivät halunneet lähteä Koreasta, mutta uskon että he saavat mahdollisuuden tulla takaisin jonain päivänä :)

Awkward moments at an art exhibition in Sinsa / Vaivaantuneisuutta taidenäyttelyssä Sinsassa

Yesterday (on Thursday) I accompanied Ten to go and see an art exhibition where one artist that she follows on Instagram was presenting his work. The exhibition was held at Gallery Grande in Sinsa, near Gangnam. It was a lovely sunny day and 23 degrees Celsius! The weather in October has been all over the place here in Seoul...

Eilen (torstaina) menin Tenin kanssa taidenäyttelyyn, jossa eräs Tenin ihailema taiteilija Instagramista oli esittämässä taidettaan. Taidenäyttely oli Gallery Grandessa Sinsassa, lähellä Gangnamia. Eilen oli aurinkoista ja 23 astetta lämmintä! Lokakuun sää täällä Seoulissa on ollut hyvin vaihtelevaa...

The name of the exhibition was You'nique / Näyttelyn nimi oli You'nique (ainutlaatuinen)

The exhibtion was in a small room where there were works by different artists on the walls. At first Ten and I were the only ones there, so we could freely look at the art and take pictures. Here are a few of my favourites:

Näyttely oli pienessä huoneessa, jonka seinillä oli eri taiteilijoiden töitä. Olimme Tenin kanssa aluksi ainoat kävijät, joten saimme vapaasti katsoa taidetta ja ottaa kuvia. Tässä on muutama suosikkini:

Some random works by different artists / Eri taiteilijoiden töitä

After a while the artist that Ten likes arrived at the exhibition with his brother. We talked with him about his work, what inspires him, why he became an artist and so on. You know, the usual stuff you talk about with artists :P He was very friendly, but he barely spoke English, so we were desperately trying to communicate with our limited Korean skills, his English and translation apps on our phones. He became an artist two years ago just for fun, he also works as a digital designer for a unisex fashion company. He is a designer by day and an artist by night. It took him about two hours to make each of his acrylic paintings. He is inspired by all kinds of music and emotions and he really likes eyes. He even had one of his works tattooed on his left arm. He offered us something to drink, so we sat with him and his brother drinking tea and coffee. His brother was quite shy, but also friendly. We had a few awkward silent moments... The constant presence of a language barrier in Korea has made me realise how important communication is in order to express yourself. It might seem obvious, but not being able to communicate fluently really affects the impression someone gets of you. At least we all tried to make conversation with each other, to some extent. Ten gave him a copy of one of her artworks in a black frame with her signature on it. The artist was very happy with it and they swapped contact details. We asked him how he started his exhibition and he explained that he just sent emails to whatever contacts he had. Maybe he'll be able to help Ten start her first exhibition, who knows? :)


Jonkin ajan jälkeen Tenin ihailema taiteilija saapui näyttelylle veljensä kanssa. Juttelimme hänen kanssaan hänen työstään, mikä inspiroi häntä, miksi hän ryhtyi taiteilijaksi jne. Tiedättehän, perus asioita, joista keskustellaan taiteilijoiden kanssa :P Hän oli hyvin ystävällinen, mutta hän ei puhunut paljon englantia, joten yritimme epätoivoisesti kommunikoida meidän rajoitetuilla korean taidoillamme, hänen englannillaan ja kännyköidemme käännös-sovelluksilla. Hän ryhtyi taiteilijaksi kaksi vuotta sitten ihan omaksi huvikseen. Hän on myös digitaalinen suunnittelija yhdellä unisex-muotiyhtiöllä. Hän on päivisin suunnittelija ja öisin taiteilija. Hänellä kesti noin kaksi tuntia jokaista akryylimaalausta varten. Kaikenlainen musiikki sekä tunteet inspiroivat häntä ja hän pitää silmistä tosi paljon. Hänellä oli jopa yksi töistään tatuoituna vasemmassa kädessään. Hän tarjosi meille juotavaa, joten istuimme hänen ja hänen veljensä kanssa juoden teetä ja kahvia. Hänen veljensä oli aika ujo, mutta myös ystävällinen. Välillä keskellämme velloi vaivaantunut hiljaisuus... Jatkuva kielimuuri täällä Koreassa on saanut minut tajuamaan, kuinka tärkeää kommunikointi on itseilmaisua varten. Tämä on ehkä päivänselvää, mutta se, ettei pysty kommunikoimaan kunnolla ihan oikeasti vaikuttaa siihen, miten toiset näkevät sinut. Ainakin yritimme jutella keskenämme jonkin verran. Ten antoi taiteiljalle tekemänsä teoksen mustissa raameissa ja siinä oli myös hänen nimmarinsa. Taiteilija oli hyvin tyytyväinen ja he vaihtoivat yhteystietoja keskenään. Kysyimme häneltä miten hän aloitti näyttelynsä ja hän selitti, että hän vain lähetti sähköposteja tutuilleen. Ken tietää, ehkä hän pystyy auttamaan Teniä aloittamaan ensimmäisen taidenäyttelynsä... :)

Feeling depressed at Seoul Grand Children's Park / Masentava käynti Seoulin suuressa lastenpuistossa

On Monday I went to the Grand Children's Park with Tyler, a 19 year old American soldier taking a break from his duties at the army base. It was a nice, sunny Autumn day and we were hoping to have a fun time at the park, especially since there was a zoo, a carneval and other things to do. We walked around the park, tried some of the outdoor percussion instruments and got some sweets from a little Korean boy. Then we went to the carneval and got on one of the rollercoasters, which was fun. We didn't want to buy an all-day ticket, because the rides were mainly for children, so after the carneval we went to the zoo.

Maanantaina menin suureen lastenpuistoon Tylerin kanssa, hän on 19-vuotias amerikkalainen sotilas, joka piti parin päivän lomaa armeijasta. Päivä oli aurinkoinen ja odotimme sen olevan hauska, sillä puistossa oli myös eläintarha, tivoli ja muuta tekemistä. Kävelimme puistossa, kokeilimme ulkoilma rumpuja ja saimme karkkeja pieneltä korealaiselta pojalta. Sitten menimme tivoliin ja hyppäsimme yhden vuoristoradan kyytiin, mikä oli hauskaa. Emme halunneet ostaa koko päivän kestävää lippua, sillä laitteet olivat enimmäkseen lapsille, joten menimme eläintarhaan.

The zoo was very depressing. The animals were in such a bad shape, the enclosures were not big enough for them and some enclosures had electrified wires. The elephants were too scared to come out of their building and the big cats were either just sitting or walking around. The lioness' skin was just sagging beneath her belly and all the animals looked so sad, even the owl looked bored out of its mind. We didn't look at the animals for too long, for obvious reasons. We visited the botanical garden afterwards, but the sad animals had completely killed our vibe, so we didn't stay there for long either. We left the park feeling down, although Tyler tried to lighten the mood by asking random questions, bless him ^^

Eläintarha oli masentava. Eläimet olivat tosi huonossa kunnossa, aitaukset olivat liian pieniä ja joissakin oli sähköistettyjä johtoja estääkseen eläimiä liikkumasta paljoa. Elefantit olivat liian peloissaan poistuakseen rakennuksestaan ja villikissat joko vain istuskelivat tai kävelivät ympäriinsä. Leijonattaren iho roikkui sen mahasta ja kaikki eläimet näyttivät surullisilta, jopa huuhkaja näytti erittäin pitkästyneeltä. Ilmeisesti emme katselleet eläimiä kovin pitkään, joten menimme kasvitieteelliseen puutarhaan. Emme olleet sielläkään kovin pitkään, sillä olimme masentuneita eläinten takia. Poistuimme puistosta harmistuneina, vaikka Tyler yritti piristää minua kyselemällä hassuja kysymyksiä. Ainakin hän yritti nostaa mielialaamme ^^

Sorry for the depressing topic, I just wanted to raise awareness about the conditions of this zoo's animals. I haven't been a fan of zoos for a while, but this zoo was definitely the worst one I've visited. Maybe some animal acitivists should do something, have a protest to raise awarenesss. I don't know how much it would help though. I don't know who funds the zoo, as the entrance was free. I found it ironic how the children's park, which is supposed to be a happy place, turned out to be very depressing. Perhaps it isn't depressing for kids, as they aren't aware of things the same way as us older people are...

Anteeksi, että kirjoitin näin masentavasta aiheesta, mutta halusin lisätä teidän tietoisuuttanne tämän eläintarhan eläinten kunnosta.Tämä oli surkein eläintarha, jossa olen käynyt, vaikka en olekaan pitänyt eläintarhoista enää niin paljon kuin lapsena. Ehkä jotkut eläinten oikeuksien puolustajat voisivat osoittaa mieltään puistoa vastaan, mutta en tiedä toimisiko se. En tiedä, kuka rahoittaa eläintarhaa, sillä se oli ilmainen.  Minusta oli ironista miten lasten leikkipuisto oli hyvin masentava, vaikka sen tarkoitus on olla iloinen paikka. Kenties se ei ole masentavaa lapsille, sillä he eivät tajua asioita samalla tavalla kuin me vanhemmat ihmiset...

Friday night was a great one :) Alina, Ten, Melina and I had fried chicken for dinner at a small chicken-curry restaurant in Hongdae. After our delicious meal, Ten and Melina went to the playground while Alina and I returned to the guesthouse to get Alina's ID card for the night club. We got lost trying to find the playground, although I'd been there twice before (led there by Ten though, in my defence...) xD Aaagh, I've been getting lost quite a lot lately... After asking a few people, we found our way there, conveniently right behind where Ten and Melina were sitting! I crept up behind them and surprised them. Ten was so happily surprised that she started talking to me in German :D

Perjantai-ilta oli mahtava :) Menimme Alinan, Tenin ja Melinan kanssa illalliselle pieneen kana-curry ravintolaan, jossa söimme paistettua kanaa. Herkullisen ateriamme jälkeen Ten ja Melina menivät leikkipuistoon kun menimme Alinan kanssa majataloon hakemaan hänen henkkariaan yökerhoa varten. Eksyimme etsiessämme leikkipuistoa, vaikka olin ollut siellä jo kaksi kertaa (tosin Tenin johdattamana...) xD Äääh, olen eksynyt aika paljon lähaikoina... Kyselimme parilta ihmiseltä ja lopulta löysimme leikkipuistolle, juuri sopivasti Tenin ja Melinan taakse! Hiivin heidän taakseen ja yllätin heidät. Ten oli niin iloisesti yllättynyt, että alkoi puhua minulle saksaksi :D

Now I'm going to tell you about the playground in Hongdae, because it isn't any old playground (although it looks old...). The playground is a place where groups of people hang out in the evenings/nights while talking, drinking and meeting new people there. There's often some street performers either singing or dancing and the atmosphere is great (even better when you're with the right people).  All kinds of interesting things happen at the playground, depending on who you meet there. There are also convenience stores and street food stalls nearby to provide people with whatever they need to enjoy their night.

Nyt kerron teille leikkipuistosta Hongdaessa, sillä se ei ole ihan mikä tahansa puisto. Leikkipuistossa ihmiset hengailevat iltaisin/öisin ja juttelevat, juovat sekä tapaavat uusia ihmisiä. Siellä on usein katuesiintyjiä joko laulamassa tai tanssimassa ja ilmapiiri on mahtava (etenkin sopivien ihmisten kanssa). Kaikenlaisia kiinnostavia asioita tapahtuu leikkipuistossa, riippuen kenet tapaat siellä. Siellä on myös lähikauppoja ja katuruoka kioskeja joista saa kaiken tarpeellisen jotta voi nauttia illasta.

We met two Finnish people at the playground! They were the second Finns I'd met in Korea, the first one was a Finnish guy I'd met there the night before at the playground too :D The ones we met on Friday were friendly siblings from Helsinki who are studying in Korea. It was nice to speak in Finnish again, although we mainly spoke English together, as I was accompanied by two Germans and a Norwegian :P The Finns went off to buy more soju (a Korean spirit) and we moved away from our spot, because a creepy old Korean man (yet another one -.-) kept taking pictures of himself and Alina. I found the Finns again a bit later, explained to them why we'd left and they joined us at the other spot. Soon it was time for Alina and I to go to Club Moti and see Jay Park performing!

Tapasimme kaksi suomalaista leikkipuistossa! He olivat toiset tapaamani suomalaiset Koreassa, tapasin ensimmäisen edellisenä iltana, myös leikkipuistossa :D Perjantaina tapaamamme suomalaiset olivat mukavat sisarukset Helsingista, jotka opiskelevat Koreassa. Oli kivaa puhua suomea jälleen, vaikka puhuimme enimmäkseen englantia keskenämme, sillä seurassani oli kaksi saksalaista ja yksi norjalainen :P Suomalaiset menivät ostamaan lisää sojua (korealaista viinaa) ja me vaihdoimme paikkaa, sillä joku karmiva vanha korealainen mies otti kuvia jatkuvasti itsestään ja Alinasta. Löysin suomalaiset uudestaan vähän myöhemmin, selitin heille, miksi olimme lähteneet ja he liittyivät seuraamme uudestaan. Pian oli aika mennä Alinan kanssa Club Motille katsomaan Jay Parkin keikkaa!

Jay Park was great! He performed quite a few of his old songs, including Joah and Girlfriend. He also sang Mommae, My Last, some more rappy songs that I didn't know and a cover of Bruno Mars' and B.o.B's Nothin' On You. I was happily surprised that he performed many "sweet" songs rather than just rap songs full of swearing xD The rest of the night went well, Alina and I had fun dancing together in the Hip hop Zone of the club. Even two Koreans joined in with us! ^^

Jay Park oli mahtava! Hän esitti aika monta vanhaa lauluaan, kuten laulut Joah ja Girlfriend. Hän lauloi myös seuraavat biisit: Mommae, My Last, joitakin rap-biisejä joita en tiennyt sekä lainakappaleen Bruno Marsin ja B.o.B:n Nothin' On You-laulusta. Olin iloisesti yllättynyt, että hän lauloi enimmäkseen "söpöjä" lauluja eikä vaan kiroilun täyteisiä rap-biisejä xD Loppu-ilta meni hyvin, meillä oli hauskaa Alinan kanssa tanssiessa yökerhon hip hop-alueella. Jopa kaksi korealaista liittyivät seuraamme! ^^

Tree climbing in Bulgwan / Puukiipeilyä Bulgwanissa

On Thursday one Korean English teacher that I know, called Jeremy, came over to the guesthouse with two of his students and they showed us how to do Korean calligraphy. I'd already done this a few times in Finland with my Korean class, so it was a familiar activity. It was fun, we learned how to write our names in Korean and we even had to grind the ink ourselves to use as paint:

Torstaina eräs korealainen englannin opettaja jonka tunnen, Jeremy, tuli majatalolle kahden oppilaansa kanssa ja he opettivat meille korealaista kalligrafiaa. Olin jo kokeillut sitä pari kertaa Suomessa korean kurssillani, joten se oli tuttua puuhaa. Se oli hauskaa, opimme kirjoittamaan nimemme koreaksi ja meidän piti jopa jauhata omat musteemme käyttääksemme niitä maalina:

After the calligraphy Jeremy suggested taking us tree climbing in Bulgwan. Four of us joined him, my new Norwegian friend Alina, one American man called Joey and one Frenchman called Matthieu. The tree climbing was at a park and the trees were covered in ropes to either use as a swing or a slide, to walk on or to use to climb up to the tree. The swing and slide were fun, the tree climbing itself very challenging. It took me ages to get the hang of it, but once I did, I managed to climb up to the branches and feel like I'd accomplished something.

Kalligrafian jälkeen Jeremy ehdotti puukiipeilyä ja vei neljä meistä Bulgwaniin kokeilemaan sitä. Menin sinne uuden norjalaisen kaverini Alinan, amerikkalaisen Joeyn ja ranskalaisen Matthieun kanssa. Puukiipeily oli puistossa, jonka puut olivat täynnä köysiä. Köysiä käytettiin keinuina, liukuratana, kävelyratana ja itse puukiipeilyssä. Keinut ja liukurata olivat hauskoja, mutta kiipeily oli hyvin haastavaa. Minulla kesti ikuisuus oppia kiipeämään kunnolla, mutta kun vihdoin tajusin miten, onnistuin kiipeämään puun oksille ja tunsin saavuttaneeni jotakin.

In order to climb up the tree, first I had to push the orange knot up as much as my leg could handle, then push the blue knot up as much as I could and finally push myself up with the use of my leg attached to the orange rope. It was hard work to say the least, especially after hiking the previous day ^^'

Kiipeily eteni siten, että ensin minun piti työntää oranssia solmua ylös niin paljon kuin jalkani kesti, sitten työntää sinistä solmua ylöspäin niin paljon kuin pystyin ja viimeiseksi minun piti työntää itseni ylös jalallani, joka oli kiinni oranssissa köydessä. Se oli rankkaa puuhaa, etenkin edellisen päivän vaellusretken jälkeen ^^'

After climbing and swinging, we took the subway back to the guesthouse. Well, at least we tried to. We'd ended up on the wrong the subway, so we had to change subway lines and transfer a few times. Just when I'd thought that I was comfortable using the subway, we ended up getting lost because of me xD Oh well, we made it to our station safe and sound and Alina joined me to go and rescue a certain friend from Jonggak, who'd forgotten her wallet and didn't have enough money to come back home (you know who you are ;P).

Kiipeämisen ja keinumisen jälkeen menimme metrolla takaisin majatalolle. Tai siis ainakin yritimme. Jouduimme väärään metroon, joten meidän piti vaihtaa metrolinjoja ja vaihtaa metroa pari kertaa. Juuri kun luulin, että olin tarpeeksi itsevarma kulkemaan metrolla, me eksyimme minun takiani xD Loppujen lopuksi saavuimme asemallemme turvallisesti. Minun piti käydä hakemassa eräs kaverini Jonggakista, sillä hän oli unohtanut lompakkonsa eikä hänellä ollut tarpeeksi rahaa palata kotiin. Alina liittyi seuraani ja selvisimme siitä paljon paremmin kuin aiemmasta metro-sekoilusta.

Hiking in Bukhansan/ Vaeltamassa Bukhansanissa

On Wednesday I went hiking with Ten and Anna. We took two metros and one bus to get to the area near the mountain. We were a bit hungry, so we bought some noodles (ramyeon) and other snacks and ate them outside a hiking shop, because we didn't really have anywhere else to eat. This was surprising for the Korean old people, walking past in their professional hiking gear, and most of them just stared at us. One old man kept looking back and smiling, even called out "Hello, my friends!".

Keskiviikkona menin vaeltamaan Tenin ja Annan kanssa. Matkustimme vuoren lähellä olevalle alueelle kahdella metrolla ja bussilla.  Meillä oli hieman nälkä, joten ostimme nuudeleita ja muuta naposteltavaa ja söimme ne yhden vaellustarvikekaupan edustalla, koska meillä ei oikeastaan ollut muuta paikkaa, jossa syödä. Ohi kulkevat vanhukset ammattimaisissa vaellusvaatteissaan tuijottivat meitä ihmeissään, sillä se oli varmaankin yllättävä näky nähdä kolme ulkomaalaista syömässä kaupan ulkopuolella.Yksi vanha mies kääntyi katsomaan meitä pati kertaa ja hymyili, hän jopa huudahti "Päivää, ystäväni!" englanniksi.

We chose a trail that involved more hiking than climbing and off we set. The hike was challenging, but definitely worth it. There were some easier parts and some very steep parts. We managed to reach the fortress (which was mainly a long wall (the great wall of Bukhansan, we joked xD)) and saw loads of old Korean people and some other tourists on our way there. Valitsimme polun, joka vaati enemmän vaeltamista kuin kiipeämistä. Se oli haastavaa, mutta sen arvoista. Polulla oli helpompia kohtia ja jyrkempiä kohtia, mutta pääsimme linnoitukselle, joka oli valitsemamme vuoren huipulla. Linnoitus oli enimmäkseen pitkä muuri, jota kutsuimme vitsillä Bukhansanin muuriksi xD Näimme vaelluksellamme paljon vanhoja korealaisia ja muutamia turisteja. Alla on kuvia polulta ja huipulta:

We got lost on our way back, as we took another trail, so we had to go back the way we came. We mananged to get back down before it was too dark. We even had the energy to run for the bus ^^' Although it took us through Seoul, it stopped conveniently right in front of our guesthouse. I would definitely recommend hiking, it was amazing <3

Eksyimme matkalla takaisin, sillä menimme toista reittä, joten menimme takaisin samaa reittiä pitkin, josta olimme tulleet. Onneksi ehdimme takaisin vuorelta ennen kuin oli liian pimeää. Meillä oli jopa energiaa juosta busssille ^^' Vaikka se ajoi läpi Seoulin, se pysähtyi juuri sopivasti majatalomme eteen. Suosittelen ehdottomasti vaeltamista, se oli mahtavaa <3
