Eating poo bread in Insadong/ Kakkaleivän syömistä Insadongissa

On Tuesday I visited Insadong, an area famous for tea shops and Korean pottery. I went there with Elli, Jasmin (another German girl) and Tania (a Russian girl). There were many cute shops selling handmade jewellery and pottery. We also tried "poo bread", which is bread in the shape of a turd with red bean paste inside. It was quite nice :P

Tiistaina kävin Insadongissa, joka on kuuluisa teekaupoistaan ja korealaisesta keramiikastaan. Kävin siellä Ellin, Jasminin (toisen saksalaisen tytön) ja Tanian (venäläisen tytön) kanssa. Siellä oli paljon söpöjä kauppoja, jossa myytiin käsintehtyjä koruja ja keramiikkaa. Kokeilimme "kakkaleipää", mikä oli kakan muotoinen leipä jonka sisällä oli punaisen pavun tahnaa. Se oli aika hyvää :P

We got to taste many different types of tea for free, such as green tea, sweet dew tea and chrysanthemum tea/ Saimme maistaa monta erilaista teelajia ilmaiseksi, kuten vihreää teetä, makeaa kaste teetä ja krysanteemi teetä:

We had a delicious Korean dinner at a nice restaurant. I had chicken bulgogi, which tasted the same as Korean food at Korea House in Helsinki ^^

Söimme herkullisen illallisen mukavassa ravintolassa. Söin kana bulgogia, joka maistui samalta kuin korealainen ruoka Korea Housessa Helsingissä ^^

After dinner we watched a man make tasty sweets out of fermented honey, starch powder and crushed almonds. They're called "kultare". First he mixed the fermented (hard) honey with the starch and somehow he formed the mixture in thin strands. In the end the strands were as thin as hair! He wrapped them around a spoonful of crushed almonds and the sweet was done. I bought a packet to share with the girls and it was a tasty snack :)

Illallisen jälkeen seurasimme, kun eräs mies teki herkullisia karkkeja käyneestä hunajasta, tärkkelyksestä ja murskatuista manteleista. Karkkeja kutsutaan nimellä "kultare". Ensin hän sekoitti kovan hunajan tärkkelykseen ja jotenkin se muodostui ohuiksi nauhoiksi. Lopulta ne oli hiuksenohuet! Hän otti lusikallisen mantelirouhetta, paketoi "hiukset" sen ympärille ja karkki oli valmis. Ostin paketin ja jaoin sen kavereiden kanssa. Se oli herkullista naposteltavaa :)

The creepiest experience of the day was being massaged by an old Korean man. We were looking at the wooden massaging cubes (?) and the salesman took one in his hand and started rubbing it against our shoulders and backs. The edges of the cube thing were quite sharp, so it was actually quite uncomfortable... Oh well, at least we got to try it and knew not to buy one.

Päivän karmivin kokemus oli saada hieronnan vanhalta korealaiselta mieheltä. Katselimme puisia hieronta kuutioita (?) ja myyjä otti yhden ja alkoi hieroa meidän olkapäitä ja selkiä sillä. Kuution kulmat olivat aika terävät, joten hieronta oli oikeastaan hyvin epämukava... No jaa, ainakin saimme kokeilla sitä ja tiesimme, että on parasta jättää ostamatta.

The story continues (finally) / Tarina jatkuu (vihdoinkin)

After only four and a half hours of sleep or so (after the nightclub), I attended a free Korean lesson at Dongguk University with Elli. It was a beginners' class, so all of the things they were learning were already familiar to me. It was nice to recap what I've already learned in Finland though, so I didn't mind. It was also a nice surprise that the Korean girl sitting next to me had also done the IB programme, but in China! We could share our lovely experiences and reminisce the joy of studying...

Noin neljän ja puolen tunnin yöunien jälkeen (yökerhon jälkeen), kävin ilmaisella koreankielen tunnilla Donggukin yliopistossa Ellin kanssa. Se oli aloittelijoiden kurssi, joten osasin jo kaikki asiat, mitä he kävivät läpi. Oli hyvä kerrata, mitä opin jo Suomessa, ja oli mukava yllätys, että vieressä istuva korealainen tyttö oli myös opiskellut IB-linjalla. Jaoimme ihania kokemuksiamme ja muistelimme opiskelun iloa...

A few hours later I met up with Melina and we took the subway to Yeouinaru station, which was near where the festival was to be held. When we arrived at the station, it was packed with people! The park by the Han River was also packed with people, it was crazy! Ten was waiting for us at the station and we found a nice spot where we could sit and chill.

Parin tunnin jalkeen tapasin Melinan ja menimme metrolla Yeouinarun asemalle, mikä oli lähellä festivaalialuetta. Asema oli täynnä ihmisiä, kun saavuimme sinne. Puisto Han-joen vieressä oli myös täynnä ihmisiä, se oli hullua! Ten odotti meitä asemalla ja yhdessä löysimme mukavan paikan, jossa voimme istua ja rentoutua.

We had the pleasure of seeing Hyukoh performing, a Korean indie band. They have some really nice songs and the lead singer is a very humble guy. He was funny too, as the audience laughed at what he said, but being foreigners we didn't understand him. Oh well, at least we got to enjoy their music not so far from the stage!

Meillä oli ilo nähdä Hyukoh:n esiintyvän, he ovat korealainen indie bändi. Heillä on tosi hyviä lauluja ja päälaulaja on hyvin nöyrä mies. Hän oli myös hauska, ainakin yleisön naurusta päätellen, mutta me emme ulkomaalaisina ymmärtäneet, mitä hän sanoi. Mutta se ei haitannut, sillä saimme nauttia heidän musiikistaan lavan läheltä!

After the music, we ate some fried chicken, kimbap and ddeokbokki /Musiikin jälkeen söimme paistettua kanaa, kimbapia ja ddeokbokkia:

At around 19:20, the long awaited firework display finally started! The fireworks were amazing, definitely some of the best I've ever seen live. Some of the fireworks were cool shapes like spirals, swirls, powder balls, hearts, fish and bunnies, while some looked like sperm xD The colours were beautiful too, I particularly liked the rainbow stars. The atmosphere was mainly good, but most of us spectators got annoyed when large groups of people got up to leave and were blocking the view of the fireworks. The Koreans were shouting at them, telling them to sit down and that they didn't want to look at people. I joined in with their shouting, which made them laugh, as they probably weren't expecting a foreigner to start shouting in Korean saying "앉아주세요!" (anjajuseyo) ^^' A group of school girls sitting next to us joined in with my shouting and we laughed. I found it amusing that they kept saying "yeppoda" meaning "pretty" when they saw the fireworks. After about an hour and a half or so, we left and joined the ocean (not sea) of people, who were also leaving. It took ages to get back home, but it was worth it to see the beautiful fireworks and experience the festival.

Noin klo 19:20 kauan odotetut ilotulitukset alkoivat! Ne olivat mahtavia, parhaimpia, joita olen nähnyt livenä. Jotkut olivat siistin muotoisia, kuten spiraaleja, kiekuroita, pulveri palloja, sydämiä, kaloja ja pupuja, mutta jotkut näyttivät spermalta xD Värit olivat myös kauniita, pidin erityisesti sateenkaari tähdistä. Ilmapiiri oli pääosin hyvä, mutta monia meistä ärsytti, kun suuret ihmisryhmät nousivat lähteäkseen ja estivät ilotulitusten näkemisen. Korealaiset huusivat heille, käskivät heitä istumaan ja sanoivat, etteivät halua katsoa ihmisiä. Liityin heidän huutamiseensa, mikä nauratti heitä, sillä he eivät varmaan odottaneet ulkomaalaisen huutavan koreaksi "앉아주세요!" (anjajuseyo) ^^' Vieressä istuva koululaisporukka liittyivät huuteluuni ja nauroimme. Minusta oli hauskaa, että he koko ajan sanoivat "yeppoda" eli "nätti" kun he näkivät ilotulitukset. Noin puolentoista tunnin jälkeen lähdimme ja liityimme ihmismereen, joka myös teki lähtöä. Kesti ikuisuuden päästä kotiin, mutta ilotulitusten näkeminen ja festivaalin kokeminen oli sen arvoista.

Partying in a Secret Nightclub/ Bilettämistä salaisessa yökerhossa

Friday was an eventful day! I'm going to start referring to all of my German friends by name now, because there are many of them. Elli and Anna are from the guesthouse I'm staying at and Ten and Melina are the girls Anna and I met on the rooftop.

Perjantai oli tapahtumarikas päivä! Alan nyt viittaamaan saksalaisiin kavereihini nimeltä, sillä heitä on aika monta. Elli ja Anna ovat samasta majatalosta, jossa asun, ja Ten ja Melina ovat katolla tapaamamme tytöt.

Anna and I walked along the Han River on Friday, trying to find Hangang Park. We didn't realise that we actually were in the park, as it's not the type of park we're used to as Europeans. It was nice to walk there though, as the weather was nice and it was very peaceful. It was a welcome change to the bustle of the city with its crazy driving and hundreds of people.

Kävelimme Annan kanssa Han-joella perjantaina, yrittäen löytää Hangang puistoa. Emme tajunneet olevamme puistossa, sillä se ei ollut sellainen puisto, johon olemme eurooppalaisina tottuneet. Siellä oli kuitenkin mukava kävellä, sillä sää oli kaunis ja siellä oli hyvin rauhallista. Se oli tervetullut muutos kaupungin kiireeseen hulluine ajotavoineen ja satoine ihmisineen.

After our peaceful walk (and being followed shortly by a weird old Korean man), we went back to the guesthouse and got ready to meet up with Ten and Melina. We met up with them in Hongdae along with Ten's other German friend, Yen, and we set off to find a good restaurant where they serve Korean BBQ. We found a good place and the food was delicious. We barbequed pork neck, beef, mushrooms, kimchi, onions, garlic and beans. This pic isn't from that night, but it's basically the same thing (with less food):

Rauhallisen kävelymme jälkeen palasimme majatalolle ja valmistauduimme tapaamaan Tenin ja Melinan. Tapasimme heidät Hongdaessa sekä Tenin toisen saksalaisen kaverin, Yenin. Lähdimme yhdessä etsimään hyvää ravintolaa, jossa voi grillata korealaisittain. Löysimme hyvän paikan ja ruoka oli herkullista, grillasimme porsaan niskaa, naudanlihaa, sieniä, kimchiä, sipulia, valkosipulia ja papuja. Alla oleva kuva ei ole siitä illasta, mutta se on melkein sama asia (mutta vähemmän ruokaa):

After dinner we went on a quest to find a good, cheapish noraebang (karaoke), but it was difficult as it was Friday night and the prices were higher than usual. After three tries we ended up going back to the first one and had a nice hour and twenty minutes or so singing along to Queen, Britney Spears, Eminem, etc. Once we'd finished singing, we watched some street performances and then Anna returned to the guesthouse to see Elli, who'd had to work that day. The four of us continued to the playground, which is famous for being a place to drink, hang out, meet people and see street performances before going to a club. It was surprising to see young kids and teenagers out late at night where there are people drinking, smoking and possibly taking drugs. We watched a group of teenagers perform some Kpop dances before heading to the secret nightclub that Ten knew about.

Illallisen jälkeen lähdimme etsimään hyvää ja suhteellisen halpaa noraebangia (karaokea), mutta se oli hankalaa, sillä oli perjantai-ilta ja hinnat olivat tavallista kalliimmat. Kolmen yrityksen jälkeen palasimme ensimmäiseen noraebangiin ja vietimme mukavan tunnin ja 20 minuuttia laulaen mm. Queeniä, Britney Spearsiä ja Eminemiä. Laulamisen jälkeen katsoimme katuesityksiä ja sitten Anna palasi majataloon nähdäkseen Ellin, joka oli ollut töissä sinä päivänä. Loput meistä menimme leikkipuistoon, joka on tunnettu paikka jossa ihmiset juovat, hengailevat, tapaavat ja katsovat katuesityksiä ennen kuin menevät yökerhoon. Oli yllättävää nähdä nuoria lapsia ja teinejä ulkona myöhään yöllä samalla kun muut juovat, tupakoivat ja mahdollisesti vetävät huumeita. Seurasimme yhden teiniporukan Kpop tanssia ennen kuin menimme Tenin tuntemaan salaiseen yökerhoon.

The nightclub was called Secret Society and its entrance was a fake Coca Cola vending machine. Inside we got a stamp om our hands, which was only visible in the UV light. Ten's artwork was there on the wall, which was a surprise to all of us, even Ten! She was over the moon about it and I must admit that it was cool ^^

Yökerhon nimi oli Secret Society (salainen yhteisö) ja sen sisäänkäynti oli feikki kokisautomaatti. Sisällä saimme käsiimme leiman, joka näkyi vain UV valossa. Yllättävää oli nähdä Tenin taidetta yhdellä seinällä, jopa Ten itse oli iloisesti yllättynyt! Täytyy myöntää, että se oli siistiä ^^

The club itself was quite nice. They mainly played hiphop and rap, so I only knew a few songs xD I came across a creepy (supposedly) American guy who wanted to dance with me, but I told him not to touch me, so he left me alone. I'd been warned about creepy Korean guys trying to get off with white girls, but none of the Koreans tried anything. There were a few older guys who were desperately trying to meet someone and there was a group hovering around some drunk English girls, but otherwise nothing as bad as what I've heard from Anna and Elli occurred. There were many foreigners in this nightclub, so perhaps foreign girls weren't such a novelty here as in other places...

Yökerho itse oli aika kiva. Siellä soitettiin enimmäkseen hiphoppia ja räppiä, joten tiesin vain muutaman laulun xD Eräs karmiva mukamas amerikkalainen mies halusi tanssia kanssani, mutta käskin häntä olla koskematta minuun, joten hän jätti minut rauhaan. Minua oli varoitettu karmivista korealaisista miehistä, jotka yrittävät iskeä valkoisia tyttöjä, mutta kukaan korealaisista eivät yrittäneet mitään. Pari vähän vanhempaa korealaista miestä halusivat selvästi tavata jonkun siellä ja yksi porukka pyöri joidenkin humalassa olevien englantilaisten tyttöjen ympärillä, mutta muuten siellä ei tapahtunut mitään yhtä pahaa verrattuna siihen, mitä Elli ja Anna olivat kertoneet minulle. Tässä yökerhossa oli monta ulkomaalaista, joten kenties ulkomaalaiset tytöt eivät olleet kovin erityinen asia kuten muissa paikoissa....

The Korean rapper San E performed at the club. I'd only heard about him the day before, so I didn't know his music. He performed well though, although not for long, perhaps only 15-20 minutes. When the music got better as the night went on, it was fun to just dance with Ten and Melina, also with Ten's friends from Singapore. It was nice how we all stuck together and supported each other whenever some creepy guy would try to approach us. Melina was drunk, so she just pushed them away xD

Korealainen räppäri San E esiintyi yökerholla. Olin kuullut hänestä vasta edellisenä päivänä, joten en tuntenut hänen musiikkiaan. Hän kuitenkin esiintyi hyvin, vaikkakin vain n. 15-20 minuuttia. Musiikin parannettua illan mittaan oli kivaa vain tanssia Tenin ja Melinan sekä Tenin singaporelaisten kavereiden kanssa. Oli mukavaa, että pidimme yhtä ja tuimme toisiamme kun joku karmiva tyyppi yritti lähestyä meitä. Melina oli humalassa, joten hän vain työnsi miehet pokkana pois tieltä xD

Mass at Myeongdong Catholic Cathedral and a somewhat disastrous dinner/ Messussa Myeongdongin katolisessa katedraalissa ja jokseenkin katastrofaalinen illallinen

On Wednesday I visited Myeongdong, an area famous for it's Kpop and beauty shops. Yet, the Myeongdong Catholic Cathedral was my main purpose to visit this part of Seoul, as I am a Catholic (in case you didn't know :P) and I hadn't been to church at all the whole time I've been in Korea. It was difficult to find my way to the cathedral, but luckily I spotted a nun who then guided me there ^^ The cathedral was beautiful and I felt very emotional when I walked inside it. It felt like a familiar place, a place I belong to. It reminded me how important my faith actually is to me. Sometimes I don't always remember that when I'm abroad. I don't know if all of you understand how I felt, but I wanted to share this side of me with you. Below you can see the cathedral itself:

Keskiviikkona kävin Myeongdongissa, kyseinen alue on kuuluisa Kpop- ja kauneustuotekaupoistaan. Toisaalta itse suuntasin sinne Myeongdongin katolisen katedraalin takia, sillä olen katolilainen (jos et tiennyt :P) ja en ollut käynyt vielä kirkossa Koreassa. Oli vaikeaa löytää tie katedraalille, mutta onneksi bongasin nunnan, joka johti minut sinne ^^ Katedraali oli kaunis ja oli hyvin tunteellista kävellä sen sisällä. Se tuntui tutulta paikalta, paikalta, jonne kuulun. Se muistutti minua siitä, kuinka tärkeä uskoni onkaan minulle. Välillä en muista sitä, kun olen ulkomailla. En tiedä, jos te kaikki ymmärrätte, miltä minusta tuntui, mutta halusin jakaa tämän puolen itsestäni teidän kanssanne. Alla on kuvia itse katedraalista:

I attended mass in Korean on Sunday (yesterday), which was an interesting experience. I don't think I've ever attended mass in a cathedral before. There were loads of people and I was the only foreigner there, as they have an English mass separately at 9am on Sundays (which is just too early for me, especially if I have to work at 11am). The mass was basically the same as in Finland, with only a few differences. Even the first hymn was the same as one we have in Finland and England! Oh, I felt emotional again while singing it (in Korean), as it reminded me of home... Here are the things that were different from what I'm used to:
We had to get up and walk to the person who was collecting the money and instead of shaking hands when saying "peace be with you", people bow instead with their hands together. As the cathedral was huge, several priests spread out along the aisles to give out communion, so we didn't have to form one huge line. The host was different to the one we have in Finland, it didn't taste like anything and it was more crispy. The melody of the "Our Father" prayer was different, but it was nice. Hymns are always nice, no matter what language they are in, I think. I was surprised that I managed to follow the lyrics from the hymn book, as I'm used to struggling with Kpop lyrics ^^' Overall, it was a nice experience. Although I didn't understand the sermon, I understood that the priest holding it was funny, because the people laughed many times at what he said. He was a bit like a certain other priest I know... ;)

Kävin sunnuntaina (eilen) korealaisessa messussa, mikä oli kiinnostava kokemus. En ole ennen ollut messussa katedraalissa, jos Pyhän Henrikin katedraalia Helsingissä ei lasketa. Siellä oli paljon ihmisiä ja olin ainoa ulkomaalainen siellä, sillä englantilainen messu on erikseen sunnuntaiaamuisin klo 9 (mikä on liian aikaisin minulle, etenkin jos minun pitää työskennellä klo 11). Messu oli lähes täsmälleen samanlainen Suomeen verrattuna, muutamia eroja lukuunottamatta. Jopa ensimmäinen virsi oli sama, kuin mitä olemme laulaneet Suomessa ja Englannissa! Se oli koskettavaa, sillä se muistutti minua kodista, vaikka lauloinkin koreaksi. Nämä asiat olivat erilaisia verrattuna suomalaiseen messuun:
Meidän piti kävellä kolehdin kerääjälle sen sijaan, että hän tuli luoksemme. Kättelyn sijaan kumarsimme toisillemme kädet ristissä, kun toivotimme toisillemme "Kristuksen rauhaa". Katedraalin suuruuden takia papit levittäytyivät käytäviä pitkin jakamaan kommuuniota, jottei meidän pitäisi jonottaa pitkään. Hostia (öylätti) oli erilainen kuin Suomessa, se ei maistunut millekään ja oli rapeampi. "Isä meidän"-rukouksen melodia oli erilainen, mutta hieno. Minusta virret ovat aina hienoja, olivat ne minkä kielisiä tahansa. Yllätyin siitä, kuinka hyvin pystyin seuraamaan virsien sanoja virsikirjasta, sillä olen tottunut ponnistelemaan Kpop-sanojen kanssa ^^' Kokonaisuudessaan messu oli hyvä kokemus. Vaikka en ymmärtänyt, mistä pappi saarnasi, tajusin että hän on hauska, sillä ihmiset nauroivat monesti hänen puheilleen. Hän oli vähän kuin eräs tietty pappi, jonka tunnen... ;)


Back to Wednesday night! One of my German friends and I went out for dinner and we fancied having pizza. We saw a place where they serve pizza, so we went there. It was honestly the worst pizza we've ever had, you couldn't even call it that! It was mainly just cheese in a pan with salami, bacon, some olive slices and clumps of sweet potato. We'd been stupid enough to order two of them (one each), but we couldn't even finish them due to all of the cheese. Some parts had some sort of thin pastry on the bottom, but it really mainly was just cheese -.- Not very nutritious, to say the least. We even had to eat it with a spoon, although we hadn't ordered the "spoon pizza" (yes, it's a thing)! Disappointed and still hungry, we left the restaurant and bought some triangle kimbap (seaweed roll with rice and some sort of filling, a bit like sushi) and icelollies and ate on a bench while watching people playing the pianos on the street. Afterwards we went to a shopping centre with 13 floors and went to the rooftop to see the view. We met two other German girls there (this place is full of Germans!) and swapped contact details. My adventures in Korea continued with them...


Takaisin keskiviikkoiltaan! Menimme syömään illallista yhden saksalaisen kaverini kanssa ja meidän teki mieli pizzaa. Näimme ravintolan, jossa myydään sitä, joten menimme sinne. Se oli oikeasti pahinta pizzaa, mita kumpikaan meistä on ikinä syönyt, ei sitä voisi edes kutsua pizzaksi! Se oli juustoa pannussa ja sen seassa oli salamia, pekonia, muutama oliivin siivu ja bataattiklönttejä. Olimme hölmön toiveikkaina tilanneet kaksi pizzaa (yksi kummallekin), mutta emme pystyneet syömään niitä kokonaan kaiken sen juuston takia. Joissain kohdissa oli jonkin sortin ohut "pohja", mutta se oli suurimmaksi osaksi vain juustoa -.- Ei kovinkaan ravinteikasta... Me jopa jouduimme syömään sitä lusikalla, vaikka emme olleet tilanneet "lusikka pizzaa" (kyllä, se on oikea asia)! Pettyneinä ja nälkäisinä lähdimme ravintolasta ja ostimme kolmio kimbappia (merilevä rulla, jossa on riisiä ja jotain muuta täytettä, vähän kuin sushi) ja mehujäätä, jotka söimme penkillä katsellessa ihmisten soittavan pianoa kadulla. Sen jälkeen menimme 13-kerroksiseen kauppakeskukseen ja kävimme sen katolla katsomassa maisemaa. Katolla tapasimme kaksi muuta saksalaista tyttöä (tämä paikka on oikeasti täynnä saksalaisia!) ja vaihdoimme yhteystietoja keskenämme. Seikkailuni Koreassa jatkuivat heidän kanssaan...

Sen nimi on 키친's 별, mikä tarkoittaa "keittiön tähteä". Tämä paikka ei ole tähteä nähnytkään!

I'm very sorry that I haven't posted anything for ages, but you'll soon see why. I've been very busy doing all kinds of things! The next five posts or so should cover all that's been going on last week (and other interesting things :P). Moi kaikki!

Anteeksi etten ole kirjoittanut tänne mitään pitkään aikaan. Olen ollut hyvin kiireinen viime viikolla, joten nyt pääsette vihdoin näkemään, mitä kaikkea olen tehnyt täällä Seoulissa! Seuraavat viisi postausta kertovat kaiken tarpeellisen ja ehkä vähän enemmänkin ;) Muuten, onnistuin vaihtamaan blogin asetukset siten, että kaikki voivat kommentoida! ^^' Nyt asiaan!


 Itaewon

I spent Monday with my Chinese friend from the guesthouse. It was her last day in Korea, so we decided to go to Itaewon and Ewha. Itaewon is the area where all the foreigners go, as it is full of foreign shops and restaurants, also international schools and the US Army base is there. I personally didn't like Itaewon, because it just looked like a generic tourist place somewhere in Europe. It was nice to be able to buy things in English for a change, but otherwise it wasn't that exciting. The best part was discovering sweet potato icecream! It was weird, but delicious :P

Vietin maanantain kiinalaisen kaverini kanssa majatalosta. Kyseessä oli hänen viimeinen päivänsä Koreassa, joten päätimme käydä Itaewonissa ja Ewhassa. Itaewon on ns. ulkomaalaisten alue, sillä se on täynnä ulkomaalaisia kauppoja ja ravintoloita sekä kansainvälisiä kouluja. Amerikan armeijan tukikohta on myös siellä. Itse en pitänyt Itaewonista, sillä se näytti perus eurooppalaiselta turistikohteelta. Oli mukavaa voida asioida englanniksi, mutta muuten siellä ei ollut mitään jännittävää. Paras kokemus oli maistaa bataattijäätelöä! Se oli outoa, mutta herkullista :P

Ewha

Ewha is an area with its own women's university. There are actually many women's universities in Korea, I don't know why. I've seen an advertisement of a men's uni too, but that's besides point. Ewha! I really like Ewha, because it's full of cute shops, the uni campus is beautiful and there are many restaurants. Here's some pictures!

Ewhan alueella on naisten yliopisto. Koreassa on oikeastaan monta naisten yliopistoa, en tiedä miksi. Olen nähnyt mainoksen yhdestä miesten yliopistosta, mutta se ei liity tähän mitenkään. Ewha! Pidän Ewhasta tosi paljon, sillä se on täynnä söpöjä kauppoja, yliopiston kampus on kaunis ja alueella on paljon ravintoloita. Kuvia!

Going Gangnam and Hongdae style/ Vierailu Gangnamissa ja Hongdaessa (WARNING/HUOM!: Includes loads of Kpop stuff!/ Sisältää paljon Kpoppiin liittyvää asiaa)

Yesterday I visited Gangnam's K-Star Road with one of my new German friends from the guesthouse. It was indeed an eventful day, starting with an old Korean man harrassing my friend. We managed to get rid of him, but it was very uncomfortable. I don't understand why some people think they can just touch us because we're white. Anyway, despite a rough start, we got to Gangnam safe and sound and started walking along the famous K-Star Road, where teddybear-shaped figurines with the names of famous Kpop groups were waiting to be photographed. Here are a few pics of them:

Eilen kävin Gangnamin K-Star Road-kadulla yhden uuden saksalaisen kaverini kanssa majatalosta. Päivä oli täynnä toimintaa ja alkoi ikävästi, sillä joku vanha korealainen mies alkoi ahdistella kaveriani. Onneksi pääsimme hänestä eroon, mutta se oli hyvin ahdistavaa. En tajua, miksi jotkut luulevat että he voivat kosketella meitä vain, koska olemme valkoisia. Huonosta alusta huolimatta pääsimme Gangnamiin turvallisesti ja aloitimme kävelemällä kuuluisaa K-Star Roadia pitkin, jota koristi Kpop-ryhmien omat nallekarhu patsaat. Ne kuin odottivat valokuvausta:

Then we walked to a café outside JYP Entertainment Center, which is the studio of various Kpop groups such as Miss A and 2PM. A woman was sitting on the road and the cars were stopping because of her, so I tried to help her to get up and move, but then some man helped her. The woman was disabled, both physically and mentally. I felt very sorry for her and I kept wondering why was she sitting there by herself, doesn't anyone care about her? We talked with her for a while, she was also waiting to see if she could spot someone famous entering or leaving the JYP building. I guess it was worth the wait, for we saw a member from 2AM (not 2PM) and the CEO himself, Jin-young Park (JYP). My friend and the woman were more excited about seeing them than I was, as I'm not really a fan of either of them xD Oh well, at least I can say I've seen someone famous in Korea...

Sen jälkeen kävelimme kahvilalle, joka oli JYP Entertainment Center-studion ulkopuolella. Studio on monien kuuluisien Kpop-ryhmien tukikohta, mm. Miss A:n ja 2PM:n. Monet autot pysähtelivät tiellä istuvan naisen takia, joten yritin auttaa häntä nousemaan ylös, mutta sitten joku mies auttoi häntä. Nainen olikin sekä fyysisesti että henkisesti kehitysvammainen ja säälin häntä hyvin paljon. En voinut kuin ihmetellä miksi hän istui yksin kadulla, eikö kukaan välitä hänestä? Juttelimme hänen kanssaan jonkin aikaa ja selvisi, että hänkin odotti bongaavansa jonkun julkkiksen joko saapuvan tai poistuvan JYP-studiolta. Näimme yhden 2AM-ryhmän jäsenistä sekä itse Jin-young Parkin, studion pääjehun. En ollut yhtä innoissani siitä kuin kaverini ja se nainen olivat, sillä en fanita kumpaakaan näkemistämme miehistä, mutta odotus oli sen arvoinen. Nyt voin ainakin sanoa, että olen nähnyt jonkun julkkiksen Koreassa...

Afterwards we walked to the Cube Studio café, Cube is another Kpop entertainment studio/company. One of my favourite Kpop groups, B2ST, belong to this company, so the café had plenty of B2ST merchandise and pictures ^^

Sen jälkeen kävelimme Cube Studio-kahvilaan, Cube on toinen Kpop-yhtiö. Yksi lempi Kpop-ryhmistäni nimeltä B2ST kuuluvat tälle yhtiölle, joten kahvilassa oli paljon B2ST-aiheista myyntitavaraa ja kuvia ^^

After going around some shops, we took the subway to Hongdae and walked around there. We saw all kinds of street performances: young teenagers dancing along to Kpop and teens singing songs in both Korean and English, also some magician/illusionist. One boy (probably around 16-18 years old) saw us in the audience, said something in Korean and then started singing All of Me by John Legend! He sang very nicely and we sang along with him. Even some other foreigners joined in with him, one man even held out his arms for a dramatic effect :D There were many talented youths performing on the streets, I was surprised that they had the courage to do so. You would never see that in Finland, unless you're my old school friends who started singing in Helsinki with some foreigners selling jewellery (you know who you are ;)).

Kauppojen kiertelyn jälkeen menimme metrolla Hongdaehen ja kävelimme siellä. Näimme kaikenlaisia katuesityksiä: nuoria teinejä tanssimassa Kpopin tahtiin ja teinejä, jotka lauloivat sekä koreaksi että englanniksi. Näimme myös jonkun taikurin/silmänkääntäjän. Yksi n. 16-18-vuotias poika näki meidät yleisössä, sanoi jotain koreaksi ja alkoi laulaa John Legendin All of Me-laulua! Hän lauloi hyvin kauniisti ja lauloimme mukana, jopa jotkut toiset ulkomaalaiset liittyivät lauluun. Yksi miehistä jopa levitti kätensä dramaattisesti laulaessaan :D Monia lahjakkaita nuoria esiintyivät kaduilla. Yllätyin heidän rohkeudestaan, sillä sellaista ei näkisi Suomessa.

We had a delicious dinner at a taco restaurant where the staff were very friendly (and the manager good looking ;D). Afterwards we walked around again and witnessed the filming of a music video, or something like that. Two guys were surrounded by a large group of people, loud music was playing and the guys were just shaking or moving in a "hiphop" fashion. It was funny to watch, because some girl had to wave smoke at them from the smoke machine and the cameraman ran around them, with another man hanging onto him (possibly to stop him from falling over). Söimme herkullisen illallisen taco ravintolassa, jonka työntekijät olivat hyvin ystävällisiä (ja johtaja hyvännäköinen ;D). Ruoan jälkeen kävelimme ympäriinsä ja näimme musiikkivideon kuvauksen, tai jotain sen tyyppistä. Kaksi nuorta miestä seisoivat suuren väkijoukon ympäröimänä, musiikki soi kovaa ja ne miehet vain heiluivat tai liikkuivat "hiphop" tyylisesti. Sitä oli hauska katsoa, sillä yhden tytön piti leyhyttää savukoneen savua miehiä päin ja kameramiehen piti juosta heidän ympäri, samalla kun joku toinen mies juoksi hänen perässään pitäen hänestä kiinni (varmaankin estääkseen kameramiestä kaatumasta). To end the night pleasantly, we visited a 노래방 (noraebang), a Korean karaoke room. In Korea you can rent your own room with your friends and choose to sing whatever you want. I don't know if they have the kind of karaoke bars that we are used to in Europe, but it was fun to be able to sing what we wanted in our own private room. I don't know how nice it was for the old couple who own the place to listen to our beautiful singing though... ^^'

Päätimme illan mukavasti käymällä noraebangissa, korealaisessa karaoke huoneessa. Koreassa voi vuokrata oman huoneen kavereiden kanssa ja valita, mitä lauluja haluaa laulaa. En tiedä onko täällä samanlaisia karaokebaareja kuten Euroopassa, mutta oli kivaa voida laulaa mitä halusimme omassa huoneessamme. En tiedä kuinka kivaa se oli paikan iäkkäille omistajille kuunnella meidän kaunista lauluamme... ^^'
